Lot 347: A Group of British Merchant Navy and Service Uniform Items
A group of British maritime and auxiliary service uniform items. The lot includes a Merchant Navy captain’s uniform jacket, a double-breasted reefer style in black wool. The jacket features eight brass buttons, each embossed with a nautical anchor device, and is fitted with shoulder boards displaying four gold lace stripes and a central diamond-shaped gold lace lozenge, the rank insignia for a Captain in the Merchant Navy. Accompanying the jacket is an officer’s peaked cap in black cloth with a plain black chin strap. Also included are two black cloth-covered cork service helmets of the Home Service pattern. One helmet is topped with a white-metal spike and circular vented base, while the second features an ornate brass-toned floral vent cap. Both helmets are marked with hand-painted white characters, including the digits 2 and 6 flanking a central square-like symbol. The visors of both helmets feature a stylised S-shaped painted device.
