Lot 394: Two items of antique wooden utility furniture including a mahogany cutlery canteen and a pine writing slope
A collection of two functional wooden items dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The first item is a mahogany-veneered rectangular cutlery canteen box. The lid features a figured wood grain and is inset with a brass shield-shaped cartouche, with a simple brass keyhole to the front. The interior is lined with blue baize and contains fitted wooden divisions for various pieces of cutlery. Internal paper labels identify sections for table knives, dessert knives, table forks, carving knife, carving fork, and table steel. A manufacturer label for J. Nowill and Sons, Sheffield is fixed to the interior lid. The second item is a utilitarian table-top clerk’s desk or writing slope constructed from light-coloured pine. The top features a horizontal section with three recessed pen grooves, connected to a sloped writing surface by a metal piano hinge. The interior consists of a single open storage compartment.
