Lot 490: A Large Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Sleeve Vase in the Kangxi Style
A large Chinese blue and white porcelain sleeve vase, also referred to as a spill vase or umbrella stand. The vessel is of cylindrical form with a flared, everted rim and a flat base. The exterior is decorated in underglaze blue with two large lobed ogival reserves, each containing a detailed scene of a bird perched on a gnarled branch amidst flowering peonies and dense foliage. The surrounding field features a dappled powder blue ground, further embellished with scattered white plum blossom sprigs. The piece is executed in the style of the Kangxi period (1662–1722), though this example likely dates to the nineteenth-century Qing Dynasty or the early twentieth-century. No maker’s marks or reign marks are visible on the exterior or the visible portion of the rim.
