Lot 930: S. Francis Smitherman, Framed Print, The SS Great Britain Arriving at New York
A framed offset lithograph after an original painting by S. Francis Smitherman (A.T.D., B.A., F.R.S.A.). The scene commemorates the arrival of the steamship SS Great Britain at South Street, New York, on 10th August 1845 during her maiden voyage. The composition shows the vessel docked alongside an active quay with figures in mid-19th-century attire, horse-drawn carts, and other sailing vessels in the harbour. The print is plate-signed Smitherman to the lower right corner of the image. Printed text below the image provides the title and artist information, while the top right margin bears the copyright mark for the s.s. Great Britain Project. The print is mounted in a wide cream-coloured card and set within a polished dark wood frame with a gilded inner slip.
