Lot 197: British Military Campaign Trunk, Royal Engineers, Major N. C. Young, MBE
A mid-20th century British military campaign trunk, previously the property of Major N.C. Young, MBE, of the Royal Engineers. The rectangular wooden chest is finished in black paint and features extensive identification markings. The lid is stencilled in white uppercase lettering with MAJOR N.C. YOUNG. M.B.E. R.E. indicating the owner’s rank, name, honours, and corps. A rectangular wooden panel applied to the centre of the lid bears the home address: 59 BASSETT AVENUE / SOUTHAMPTON / ENGLAND. A partial circular shipping stencil is visible to the left of the name, containing the text GAPORE, relating to transit through Singapore. The front face of the trunk carries a secondary identification plaque repeating the officer’s name and Southampton address. Construction consists of solid wooden planks with heavy-duty metal hinges and two front-mounted hasp-and-staple closures for securing the lid. The interior remains in a natural, unpainted state and contains remnants of the original brown paper lining.
