Lot 348: Vintage Elder Dempster Lines West Africa Service Black Metal Shipping Trunk
A vintage black-painted metal shipping trunk or cabin chest used for maritime travel on the Elder Dempster Lines West Africa service. The lid features the stencilled name W. B. SMITH in large white block letters. The exterior retains several original paper shipping labels, including a rectangular blue, white, and black Elder Dempster Lines label marked HOLD, NOT WANTED ON VOYAGE, and WEST AFRICA with a large digit 9. A circular black and white label featuring the Elder Dempster S logo and the text WEST AFRICA SERVICE is also present. A partial red and white label at the top edge of the lid is transcribed as LIVERPOOL. The trunk is constructed from metal with a hinged lid, two metal latches, and a central keyed lock mechanism. A leather carrying handle is attached to the side. The interior contains period packing materials including brown paper, yellow tissue paper, and plastic sheeting. Included is a section of the Sunday Express newspaper dated Sunday 11 September 1988 with headlines regarding pension rebates and a bid for ADT.
