Lot 601: Japanese Tokoname Redware Relief Decorated Dragon Vase by Matsushu Taien
A Japanese Tokoname redware pottery vase by Matsushu Taien, made from unglazed reddish-brown stoneware. The cylindrical body is decorated in high relief with a dynamic three-toed dragon amongst stylised clouds, while the reverse features a large ceremonial musubi bow with long, detailed tassels. The background of the relief panels is finished with a stippled pear-skin texture. The neck and foot are embellished with impressed geometric meander fretwork bands and gadrooned moulding. The underside bears an impressed square seal mark reading Matsushu Taien (松州台苑).
