Lot 267: A British Military Pattern Folding Campaign Bed and Matching Quilted Mattress
A vintage British military-pattern folding camp bed, also known as an officer’s campaign bed, dating to the first half of the 20th century. The lot comprises three main components: a folding wooden-framed bed base, a separate quilted mattress, and a set of four metal spreader bars. The bed base features a heavy-duty light green canvas secured to dark-stained wooden rails with metal rivets, incorporating metal hinges for portability. The separate green canvas mattress is quilted longitudinally, filled with padding, and retains original brown leather tie-down straps. Indistinct black ink-stamped markings are visible on one end of the mattress. A wooden rail bears an oval paper label from the removals and storage company Pickfords, which features the printed words Number and Name, with the handwritten details 5 and Smith respectively. The set includes four curved metal spreader bars designed to tension the canvas at the head and foot during assembly.
