Lot 301: A Pair of Early 20th Century Painted Metal Carpenters Chests
A pair of early 20th-century black painted sheet metal carpenters chests or travel trunks. Each rectangular chest is of sheet metal construction with reinforced edges and a hinged lid. The trunks are fitted with heavy-duty metal drop handles to both ends. The front of each chest features a central lock plate and a folding latch. The lid of the chest pictured is personalised with large stencilled white characters reading W. B. SMITH. A small oval metal plate is centrally mounted on the lid, though it is heavily worn with the inscription no longer clearly legible. An auction lot sticker is present on the front corner reading Lot 301 x2. These chests were designed for durable storage and transport, featuring an authentic industrial patina.
