Lot 869: A Framed 19th Century Steel Engraving of The Royal Albert Viaduct at Saltash 1859
A mid-19th century steel engraving depicting the Royal Albert Bridge, titled in print to the lower margin The Royal Albert Viaduct at Saltash 1859. The composition illustrates the iconic twin lenticular spans designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel with a steam train crossing the structure over the River Tamar. The background shows the town of Saltash rising on the hillside, while the foreground depicts a pastoral scene with three cows in a fenced field. The print demonstrates the fine, sharp line work and high contrast characteristic of steel plate engraving from the mid-Victorian period. It is presented in a modern black frame with a gilt-effect inner border and a dark grey mount.
