Lot 1009: A Vintage Silver-Plated and Celluloid Dressing Table Set
A vintage silver-plated and celluloid dressing table set, comprising a shaped tray, hand mirror, hairbrush, and comb. Each piece is decorated with embossed repousse scrolling foliate and floral motifs, accented with gold-toned highlights. The hand mirror features a circular glass plate within a beaded border, leading to a shaped handle with scrolling decoration. The hairbrush and comb are constructed with cream-coloured celluloid bodies, the brush having an oval head with white bristles and the comb featuring a silver-plated spine with a central floral motif. The tray features a scalloped rim and a central section engraved with elaborate scrolling patterns. The underside of the tray bears a stamped mark reading SILVER PLATED above MADE IN ENGLAND.
Condition report:
The set displays widespread surface tarnish and oxidation to the silver-plated surfaces across all items (photo 1). There is significant scratching and scuffing visible on both the interior and the reverse of the dressing table tray (photo 2). General wear and thinning are evident to the gold-toned decorative highlights on the mirror, brush, and comb handles (photo 3). The celluloid components and bristles appear structurally sound with no visible losses or teeth missing from the comb.
