Lot 580: A Vintage Hammadi Arfaoui Hand-painted Earthenware Vase and Charger
A vintage Hammadi Arfaoui hand-painted earthenware vase and charger, comprising a bulbous vessel with a flared rim and a coordinating shallow circular plate. The set is decorated in the traditional Nabeul style, featuring a vibrant turquoise-blue ground accented with cobalt blue, yellow, and terracotta tones. The hand-painted underglaze decoration is executed in black line-work, depicting intricate symmetrical geometric patterns and stylized floral motifs. The interior of the vase is unglazed, showing the natural reddish-orange earthenware body. The underside of the charger bears a printed circular black stamp; the characters in the top arc read ‘CERAMIQUE’, the horizontal central text reads ‘HAMMADI’, and the characters in the bottom arc read ‘ARFAOUI’. A white adhesive auction lot sticker is present on the side of the vase reading ‘HCP Auctions South West Lot 580’.
Condition report:
The two-piece set is in very good overall condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs to the glazed surfaces (photo 1). The unglazed foot rim of the charger shows minor, expected shelf wear and light surface soiling (photo 3). The glaze retains a strong, high-gloss finish throughout (photo 2).
