Lot 652: A Vintage Chinese Satsuma Style Porcelain Fish Bowl / Planter
A vintage Chinese Satsuma style porcelain fish bowl / planter of large proportions. The exterior body is decorated with a continuous narrative scene depicting various figures in ornate robes set within a garden landscape filled with flowering chrysanthemums and stylized trees. This decoration is executed in polychrome enamels with extensive use of raised gilding (moriage) and rows of raised gilt beads. The interior of the bowl is hand-painted with four orange goldfish swimming among sprays of green water weeds. A broad, flat rim features a repeating pattern of stylized butterfly and foliate motifs within decorative borders. The entire piece is finished with a characteristic cream-coloured crackle glaze. The base bears a square red seal mark reading ‘中国制造’ (Zhongguo Zhizao), which translates as ‘Made in China’. Two paper auction labels are attached to the rim; one reads ‘HCP Auctions South West Lot 652’ and the other bears the number ‘46738’.

Condition report:
The bowl shows all-over fine glaze crazing, which is an intentional feature of this style of ware. There is some visible wear to the gilding on the upper rim (photo 1). The unglazed foot rim shows minor discoloration and shelf wear (photo 4). No chips, cracks, or structural repairs are visible in the provided photographs.
