Lot 1137: An Antique Gothic Revival Two-Piece Glazed Oak Library Bookcase
An antique Gothic Revival two-piece glazed oak library bookcase, constructed with a traditional two-part carcass. The upper section features a pair of large glazed doors, each divided into twelve panes by substantial glazing bars. The top two rows of panes are decorated with carved Gothic-style lancet arches, a defining architectural feature of the period. The interior is fitted with three adjustable wooden shelves set against a reddish-brown painted backboard. The lower section comprises a two-door cupboard, each door featuring two raised and fielded rectangular panels. The base is fitted with small circular brass drop handles and the two sections are separated by a stepped waist moulding, topped with a simple flared cornice. Two small white adhesive auction labels are present on the upper door frame and top edge, both bearing the printed number ‘1137’. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the piece.

Condition report:
The bookcase is in a worn, unrestored condition throughout. The wood finish on the lower cupboard doors is significantly degraded, showing extensive white scuffing, drying of the timber, and loss of original polish (photo 1, photo 4). There are general surface scratches, scuffs, and small indentations consistent with age and use visible across the carcass (photo 5). The upper doors are currently tied shut with a white plastic cable tie (photo 2), indicating a likely fault with the original latching or locking mechanism. The glass is intact but requires thorough cleaning.
