Lot 1163: A Trio of Antique Framed Artworks and Ephemera
A trio of antique framed artworks and ephemera, comprising an oil painting, a woven silk picture, and a late Victorian advertising calendar. The first item is a landscape oil painting on canvas board depicting a traditional English village scene, featuring a prominent church spire and red brick houses overlooking a reflective body of water. The painting is housed in a tiered gilt and wood frame. The second item is a woven silk picture, likely a Stevengraph, depicting a dove in flight carrying an olive branch against a radiant sunburst background. This piece is presented in a heavily ornate Rococo-style gilt composition frame with scrolling leaf and floral motifs. The third item is a printed 1895 calendar advertisement for H. & H. James, featuring a central chromolithographic illustration of three children outside a shop titled A PENNY TO SPEND. The lower section includes printed black text reading H. & H. JAMES, Tea Dealers, Grocers, & GENERAL DRAPERS, BOOT & SHOE WAREHOUSE, CINDERFORD and AGENTS FOR W. & A. GILBEY’S WINES & SPIRITS. The calendar is set in a simple painted wooden frame under glass.
Condition report:
The 1895 calendar displays visible foxing and yellowing across the paper surface (photo 3). The gilt composition frame on the silk picture shows minor surface dirt and general age-related wear to the ornate details (photo 4). The oil painting and its frame appear in stable condition with minor surface dirt and light scuffs to the gilt finish (photo 2).
