Start price: £3

Estimated price: £8 - £12

Buyer's Premium:

A pair of vintage Allcock & Co wood and composition fishing reels, dating from approximately the 1930s. The lot features a large Scarborough pattern sea fishing reel constructed from turned hardwood, likely mahogany or walnut, featuring a brass star-back foot, central spindle, and a direct-drive brass handle arm. The spool is designed with four circular ventilation holes. Attached to the brass foot is a handwritten white paper label inscribed Allcock & Co Scarborough Reel. 1930s £39. The second item in the lot is a smaller dark brown composition centrepin reel, potentially Bakelite, equipped with a single handle knob and a central tension screw. This reel includes a metal foot and a wire line guide, and is currently spooled with a length of yellow braided line. Both pieces reflect the materials and construction techniques characteristic of early-to-mid 20th-century British angling tackle.

Condition report:

The wooden reel displays significant surface wear, including scuffs, scratches, and minor impact marks to the rim edges (photo 2). A small patch of white surface residue or paint is visible on the outer face of the hardwood spool (photo 1). The brass components show a natural darkened patina (photo 1). The composition reel appears intact with general surface wear and light scratching consistent with use (photo 1), while the metal foot exhibits minor tarnishing (photo 2).
