Lot 727: A Vintage Khokhloma Hand-painted Lacquered Wooden Seven-Piece Tableware Set
A vintage Khokhloma hand-painted lacquered wooden seven-piece tableware set, dating from the mid-to-late 20th century. The set consists of a cylindrical vessel and six assorted spoons of varying forms. The pieces are decorated in the traditional Khokhloma folk style, featuring hand-painted botanical motifs including rowan berries and strawberries. The decorative scheme utilises a traditional palette of cinnabar red, gold, and black lacquer over turned wood. The cylindrical container is finished with a flared yellow base and rim, with an intricate floral scroll pattern around the main body. The spoons feature a mix of round and oval bowls, with interior decorations matching the vessel and handles finished in red, black, and gold. No legible maker’s marks, signatures, or export labels are present on the items. The lacquer finish displays a characteristic high-gloss sheen typical of this regional Soviet-era craft tradition.
Condition report:
The set exhibits signs of light age-related wear throughout. Minor paint loss and surface scuffing are visible on the flared yellow rim and base of the cylindrical vessel (photo 1). The spoons show light wear to the edges of the bowls and some minor abrasions to the painted handles (photos 2 and 3). The decorative lacquer remains largely intact with no major chips, cracks, or structural damage visible.
