Lot 865: A Set of Four Vintage Rustic Branch and Driftwood Side Chairs
A set of four vintage rustic side chairs, each exhibiting unique primitive folk art construction from natural unpeeled wood branches and gnarled limbs. The chairs feature seats constructed from multiple vertical reclaimed flat wooden planks, some retaining traces of red, green, and white paint. The backrests are formed from irregular, natural-growth branches, with one chair featuring a distinctive serpentine vertical member. The construction utilises primitive joinery with exposed fasteners and thick natural fibre rope lashing, which serves both structural and decorative purposes. Two chairs bear modern white adhesive stock labels, one inscribed with the characters 46717 and – 865, and another inscribed 46717; these are contemporary identifiers and not maker’s marks. No original maker’s marks or stamps are visible on the pieces.

Condition report:
The chairs are in a weathered and distressed condition, consistent with their rustic design and age. There is significant wear and loss to the paint remnants on the seats (photos 1 and 2). Natural checking and splitting are visible to the wood members throughout the set (photos 2 and 3). Surface abrasions and marks are present across all chairs (photo 4). The structural integrity of the primitive joinery and ropework appears commensurate with the intended style.
