Lot 34: An Antique Brass Porthole Window and Pair of Heavy-duty Actuators
Sold for: £9
A circular brass porthole window and a pair of associated heavy-duty actuators, likely of early-to-mid 20th century British maritime origin. The porthole is of solid brass construction, featuring a hinged glass light within a substantial mounting frame, secured by a single swing bolt with a circular threaded nut. The frame includes six pre-drilled holes for installation. Accompanying the window are two separate brass worm-gear actuators, designed for mechanical operation of heavy hatches or window banks. These actuators comprise long, square-threaded acme rods with integrated bronze and brass mounting brackets, pulleys, and geared mechanisms. The metal surfaces exhibit a naturally weathered patina with heavy oxidation and verdigris, characteristic of long-term exposure in a marine environment. The actuators include iron components such as springs and fasteners which show significant surface corrosion.
Porthole Outer Diameter: 30.5 cm
Actuator Length: 61 to 66 cm.
Condition report:
The lot is in salvaged, as-found condition. The brass and bronze components show heavy oxidation and green verdigris across all surfaces (photo 1). The glass light within the porthole features a prominent diagonal crack extending across the lower portion (photo 2). Significant surface rust and pitting are visible on the iron springs and various fasteners of the actuator mechanisms (photo 3). The mechanical functionality of the worm-gear actuators has not been tested and components may be seized due to corrosion.
