A pair of carved wood Chinese figures depicting a young boy and a young girl in traditional kneeling postures. Each figure is constructed from solid wood with a hand-painted polychrome gesso finish. The boy is depicted with a traditional shaved head featuring a central tuft of hair, wearing a turquoise tunic with pink borders. The girl figure is styled with hair in twin buns secured by pink bands, wearing a turquoise bib-style garment decorated with pink straps and a central four-pointed star. Both figures are modeled with rounded folk-art features and downcast eyes. A handwritten paper label is adhered to the chest of the boy figure which reads: Vendor 1924 / PAIR OF CARVED WOOD / VINTAGE CHINESE FIGURES / RES £ 10. The figures are finished in a matte palette of turquoise, pink, and off-white.
