A late Victorian side table of bamboo construction, reflecting the Aesthetic Movement fashion for Japonisme and Chinoiserie furniture. The rectangular top is set with a textured paper or fine grasscloth panel displaying a linear, bark-like pattern, bordered by a dark-stained wooden frame and bamboo gallery edges. The structure is supported by four splayed legs with a scorched ‘tortoiseshell’ finish, connected by bamboo cross-stretchers. A lower tier features a woven seagrass or wicker shelf, providing additional storage or display space. The underside and joints show traditional pinned construction methods typical of bamboo furniture from the late 19th century. A white adhesive label on the top surface reads ‘850’, and a small pink circular adhesive label is present at one corner.
