Lot 194: Antique Travel Trunk and a Collection of Rusted Hand Tools

This auction ended on 31 October 2026.

Start price: £3

Estimated price: £3 - £5

Buyer's Premium: 20%

An antique travel trunk of rectangular form, featuring a dark blue or black painted textured body constructed with a wood core and canvas or fiberboard exterior. The trunk is reinforced with heavy-gauge oxidized iron corner brackets and vertical iron straps, secured with numerous metal rivets along the lid and edges. A single worn leather or thick fiber handle is mounted to one side with iron brackets. The exterior is heavily weathered and bears multiple remnants of past travel, including a partially intact white label reading FRAGILE in red print on the lid. A handwritten paper label affixed to the lid is inscribed COWARD. SHEFFIELD / VIA GREENSANK / St. Dominick / near Saltash / PLYMOUTH / CORNWALL with a postcode at the bottom appearing to read PL12 6. Several other faded, torn, and illegible paper fragments and barcodes are present on the lid.

The interior is lined with a coarse, light-coloured paper or fabric showing significant foxing and staining. The trunk contains a collection of assorted, heavily rusted hand tools and hardware, including several metal files, chisels, a hammer head, lengths of metal wire, rope fragments, and miscellaneous iron components.
