Lot 187: A Painted Cast Iron Punch and Dog Doorstop

Live auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £20

Estimated price: £20 - £30

Buyer's Premium: 20%

A painted cast iron doorstop, modeled as the traditional character Mr. Punch accompanied by a performing dog. The figure is cast in a whimsical, grotesque style, featuring an exaggerated toothy grin, large blue eyes, and a tall, scalloped jester-style hat. He is depicted wearing a red tunic with yellow ruffled collar and cuffs. Beside him, a small dog stands on its hind legs wearing a black top hat. The entire composition is set upon a stepped, tiered oval base. The figure shows evidence of its two-part casting with a visible vertical seam running through the centre of the body. The surface retains a significant portion of its original polychrome paint, now heavily weathered to reveal the oxidised cast iron beneath. There are no maker’s marks, signatures, or inscriptions legible on the base or body of the figure across any of the surfaces.
