Lot 165: A Pair of Cast Stone Cherub Wall Corbels
A pair of cast stone wall corbels modeled as winged cherub heads. Each piece is constructed from reconstituted stone with a heavy, textured finish and weathered patina consistent with outdoor exposure. The first corbel features a cherub with tight, curly hair and outspread feathered wings, terminating at the base in a foliate bunch of grapes or pinecone motif. The second corbel depicts a cherub with a more contemplative downward gaze, framed by a high arched border. This border contains a row of relief-molded characters; the cast characters on the arched border above the head are applied in relief and appear to read M O U U D D S U D V, though they are stylized rather than forming a legible manufacturer’s name. The reverse of each corbel is flat for wall mounting.
