Lot 519: A Victorian Cast Iron Arched Fireplace Surround
A Victorian cast iron fireplace front plate of a type common in late 19th-century British domestic architecture. The piece is constructed from cast iron and features a central arched opening. The interior rim of the arch is decorated with a raised moulding featuring a foliate or egg-and-dart pattern. The front surface is finished in a white paint, while the reverse shows the raw cast metal. Two adhesive labels are present on the front: a printed label reading 519 and a handwritten label reading 9492. No foundry marks or pattern numbers are visible on the front or rear surfaces.
Condition report:
The item is in worn, as-found condition. The front white paint finish is distressed with significant chipping, cracking, and areas of loss, particularly along the lower edge and within the decorative moulding. Surface rust is present where the paint has failed. The reverse of the plate exhibits heavy and uniform surface oxidation and rust.
