Lot 660: A German Relief-Moulded Ceramic Wall Plate with Black Forest Scene
A large relief-moulded ceramic wall charger or plate, likely earthenware, featuring a polychrome glazed Alpine or rustic landscape in the Black Forest style. The central scene depicts a traditional chalet or farmhouse with a steeply pitched roof, set within a wooded area with mountains in the background and a stream with a small stone bridge in the foreground. The decoration is finished in various coloured glazes, including a blue sky with white clouds, green foliage, and earth tones for the buildings and terrain. The reverse of the plate bears a printed mark in a sans-serif font reading Foreign with the number 15 below. There is an impressed model number 4545 in the centre and a further partially obscured impressed mark near the upper rim, possibly reading 7815. The Foreign mark indicates the item was imported into the United Kingdom, typically from Germany or Continental Europe, during the late 19th to mid-20th centuries.
Condition report:
The front of the charger is in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. The reverse shows yellowish staining around the foot rim and across the base. A few minor firing imperfections and kiln marks are present on the back.
