Lot 158: A Large J. Chamberlain and Co. Glazed Terracotta Garden Planter
A large terracotta garden planter of tapered cylindrical form, manufactured by J. Chamberlain and Co. The vessel features a thick, rounded, overhanging rim. The exterior is finished with a matte turquoise blue-green slip decoration, while the rim and interior surfaces remain in the natural, unglazed reddish-brown terracotta. The shoulder of the pot features an impressed maker mark reading J. CHAMBERLAIN and CO. This manufacturer is associated with the Wychbold Pottery in Worcestershire, active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
36cm in diameter, 39cm tall.
Condition report:
The item shows signs of use consistent with age and outdoor display. A visible hairline crack extends from the rim downwards into the body of the pot. The interior exhibits significant staining and organic growth, including moss and algae. Minor chips and surface abrasions are present on the rim and across the exterior slip-glazed surface.
