Lot 388: A set of eleven VMC French clear glass demijohns
A set of eleven clear glass demijohns of mould-blown construction, manufactured by Verreries Mecaniques Champenoises (VMC) in Reims, France. Each vessel features a bulbous body tapering to a narrow neck, equipped with twin-applied loop handles for transport. The glass is clear soda-lime with a slightly textured surface characteristic of the manufacturing process. The bases are smooth and slightly concave, featuring a circular mould seam and no pontil mark. Several examples bear embossed markings near the base, with the initials V M C arranged in an upper arc and FRANCE in a lower arc. These carboys were designed for utilitarian purposes such as brewing or liquid storage.
Condition report:
The items are in good used condition. There is evidence of previous use throughout the collection, including interior residue, cloudiness to the glass, and surface dust. No significant chips, cracks, or repairs were observed during cataloguing.
