Lot 548: A Mid-20th Century Vimto Vitreous Enamel Advertising Sign
A rectangular vitreous enamel advertising sign for the British soft drink brand Vimto. The sign is constructed from vitreous enamel on a steel substrate, featuring a vibrant red ground with bold white block lettering outlined in black. The layout is designed for vertical display, with the text arranged in three distinct sections reading DRINK VIMTO SOLD HERE. No manufacturer names or maker marks are discernible on the face or along the edges. A small white adhesive lot tag with the number 548 is located in the lower-left corner.
Condition report:
The sign is in a weathered, as-found condition. There is significant enamel loss and chipping, particularly along the left-hand margin and around the perimeter where the metal substrate is exposed. These areas show heavy surface oxidation and rust. The central VIMTO lettering remains largely intact and legible, though some minor pitting and small enamel flecks are missing within the white characters. The reverse side exhibits extensive, deep-seated rust and a near-total loss of the original protective coating.
