Lot 604: An Art Nouveau Silver Hand Mirror by William Aitken
An Art Nouveau silver-backed hand mirror by the Birmingham maker William Aitken. The circular reverse is decorated in high-relief repoussé work featuring a dense composition of pendulous fuchsia blossoms and sinuous, flowing foliate scrolls. At the centre is a vacant, shield-shaped cartouche. The tapering handle is similarly decorated with conforming Art Nouveau floral and scroll motifs, terminating in a rounded, undecorated end. The mirror features a bevelled circular glass plate.
Gross weight: 420.5 grams.
Condition report:
The silver displays a natural patina with tarnish in the recessed areas of the decoration. There is minor surface wear and small indentations consistent with age and use. The mirror plate shows signs of foxing and degradation to the silvering, particularly around the edges.
