Lot 616: A Collection of Approximately 50-60 Books and Pamphlets Relating to West Country Topography and Local History
A collection of approximately 50-60 printed materials primarily focused on the history, topography, maritime heritage, and folklore of Cornwall, Devon, and Plymouth. The assortment comprises a variety of formats including hardcover volumes, softcover booklets, staple-bound pamphlets, and trade paperbacks, many issued by small local presses.
Notable hardcover titles include Stannary Law: A History of the Mining Law of Cornwall and Devon by Robert R. Pennington, the Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom, and a Ward Lock Red Guide for South Cornwall in classic red cloth.
The collection features numerous local interest and topographical works such as The Cornish Countryside and Views of Old Plymouth by Sarah Foot, Cornish Churches by Joan Rendell, A Parish Album of Callington by George Bishop, Plymouth Yesterday and Today by Vic Gardner, and The Land Beside the Celtic Sea by Richard Pearse.
Folklore and dialect are represented by titles including Cornish Legends, Supernatural in Cornwall by Michael Williams, Cornish Sayings, Superstitions and Remedies, A Glossary of the Cornish Dialect, and a booklet on Padstow’s Obby Oss. Other niche publications include The Plymouth Blitz, A Stitch in Time by Natalie Allen, Pickle Cockle Alley, Saltash by Norman J. Ash, and various periodicals such as Old Cornwall (Vol. XI, No. 8, Spring 1995). The lot also contains wire-bound educational projects and local poetry such as Poems for the Early Bird by David Prowse.
Condition report:
The collection is in good vintage condition overall. The majority of the softcover and staple-bound booklets show light shelf wear and minor creasing to the corners. Some spines and covers exhibit slight sun-fading consistent with age. Internal pages show visible tanning to the edges of the older paperback editions. These are ungraded circulation copies.
