Lot 632: Two Antique Brass Fly Fishing Reels including a Victorian Crankwind Salmon Reel
A collection of two antique brass fly fishing reels of varying dimensions. The larger item is a Victorian-style crankwind salmon fly reel, measuring approximately 3 3/4 inches in diameter, featuring a curved winding handle with a dark turned knob and multiple screw heads visible on the faceplate. The smaller reel is a brass fly reel dating from the 1920s. Both items are constructed from brass and exhibit traditional assembly techniques of the period. No stamped manufacturer names, brand marks, or serial numbers are visible on the bodies of either item. The reels are accompanied by two handwritten descriptive card tags. The design of the larger reel is consistent with late 19th-century British manufacture, resembling styles produced by makers such as Steven of Berwick or Malloch.
Diameter of larger reel: 3 3/4 inches.
Condition report:
Both reels exhibit a natural aged brass patina with surface tarnishing and wear consistent with historic angling use. The smaller reel features a filed foot as noted on the accompanying tag. Surface scratches and minor indentations are present across the brass bodies, commensurate with age and field use. The mechanical components appear intact, though they have not been tested for functional precision.
