Lot 641: A Cased Brass Sikes Hydrometer Set by Farrow and Jackson Limited
A Sikes hydrometer set manufactured by Farrow and Jackson Limited, London and Paris. The instrument is constructed from brass and is housed in a rectangular mahogany case with brass hinges. The interior of the lid is lined with padded magenta silk, while the base is fitted with a dark velvet lining. The set comprises a brass Sikes hydrometer float with a weighted bulb and a graduated square-section stem. It is accompanied by a complete set of nine circular slotted brass weights and one small cap weight. Several weights are engraved with numerals including 60, 70, 80, and 90. The set also contains a mercury-in-glass thermometer mounted on a brass scale plate. The plate is engraved with the maker’s mark Farrow and Jackson Ltd London and Paris and features a scale graduated from 30 to 100.
Condition report:
The instrument is in good and complete condition. The brass components exhibit a natural age-related patina and minor surface tarnish but show no signs of significant corrosion. The mahogany case has typical minor surface scuffs and wear consistent with age. The interior silk lining is intact but shows some fading and creasing. The thermometer glass remains intact and the weight set is mechanically complete.
