Lot 662: A Trio of Mid-20th Century Miniature Ceramic Tea Services
A collection of three distinct miniature ceramic tea services. The first service is crafted from white porcelain or fine-glazed earthenware, featuring transfer-printed decoration consisting of a broad pink band to the rims and a repeating dark blue geometric square motif. The teapot lid and spout include remnants of gilded accents. This set comprises a teapot with lid, a cream jug, and several cups and saucers. The base of the pieces bears the printed mark Foreign in blue. The second service is composed of white porcelain or fine-glazed earthenware decorated with red floral sprays and green foliage, with the handles accented by blue-painted lines. This group includes a cup, saucer, creamer, lidded sugar bowl, and a small rectangular dish. The base of the saucer is printed with the mark FOREIGN in red. The third service is a nursery-ware style set in glazed earthenware, featuring multi-colour transfer-printed scenes and associated text from various nursery rhymes, including Simple Simon Met a Pieman, Little Jumping Joan, Ring o Roses, ABC Tumble Down D, and What Are Little Girls Made Of. This service includes a teapot with lid, cups, and saucers, with the rims finished with a gilded line.
Condition report:
The collection is in generally good vintage condition. The pink-banded service shows minor rubbing and wear to the gilded accents, particularly on the teapot. The red floral pieces exhibit minor surface marks and light kiln grit to the base of the sugar bowl. The nursery rhyme service shows extensive and fine all-over crazing to the glaze across all pieces, which is characteristic of this earthenware type. There is some minor localized staining within the crazing and light wear to the gilded rims.
