Lot 671: A Newhall Pottery Co Ltd Indian Tree Pattern Earthenware Dinner Service
A collection of Newhall Pottery Co Ltd earthenware tablewares decorated in the Indian Tree pattern. The set comprises a circular twin-handled lidded tureen with a pedestal base and decorative finial, together with several dinner plates and side plates. The Chinoiserie-inspired decoration features a polychrome transfer-printed design of a gnarled flowering tree with pink blossoms and turquoise accents on a cream ground. The rims are finished with a brown geometric lattice border interspersed with floral sprays. Each piece bears the printed maker mark to the underside consisting of a shield-shaped cartouche containing the word NEWHALL above a stylised castle, with HANLEY and ENGLAND below. This mark was utilised by the factory during the mid-20th century.
Condition report:
The service is in generally good used condition. Fine surface crazing is present to the glaze on several pieces, which is common for earthenware of this period. There are minor surface scratches and light age-related marks consistent with domestic use. One plate exhibits a small brown firing mark to the reverse. No major chips, cracks, or repairs are visible.
