Lot 764: A Pair of 20th Century Tyrolean Style Pine Side Chairs
A pair of 20th-century side chairs in the Tyrolean or Alpine folk style. Each chair is constructed from solid pine and features an elaborately shaped, scrolling back splat with a central heart-shaped piercing and incised decorative borders. The solid plank seats are joined to the base with four splayed, tapered legs using wedged through-tenon joinery, which is visible on the seat surfaces. The back splats are secured via a slotted housing joint. One chair bears a modern auction lot sticker marked Lot 764, while the other features a small white adhesive label with the handwritten number 9492. No maker’s marks or signatures are present.
Condition report:
The chairs exhibit general signs of age and use, including surface scratches, stains, and wear to the finish throughout. One chair shows a visible gap and separation between the two planks forming the seat towards the rear. The joinery where the back meets the seat on one example appears slightly distressed.
