Lot 808: A Collection of Classical Reproduction Bedroom Furniture in Figured Yew Veneers
This collection of bedroom furniture is designed in a classical reproduction style, characteristic of late 20th-century British manufacture. The suite features highly figured veneers, likely yew or cherry, with a polished finish and decorative dark wood inlaid stringing. The collection includes a tall chest of drawers with a configuration of two short over three long drawers, featuring a shaped serpentine top and drawer fronts with machine-cut dovetail joints. The dressing table is a kneehole design with a shaped front and two drawers, supported by four fluted, tapered legs. It is accompanied by a separate three-part folding triptych mirror and an upholstered stool with a button-tufted seat in cream damask-style fabric. A pair of bedside cabinets is included, each featuring a single drawer over a lower cupboard section designed to resemble two drawer fronts. These units incorporate a pull-out slide above the drawer, inset with a green, gold-tooled faux-leather skiver. The collection is completed by a shaped wooden headboard with a scalloped top rail and inlaid stringing. All pieces are fitted with matching antiqued brass-effect swan-neck handles on decorative backplates. While the style is consistent with manufacturers such as Bevan Funnell or Strongbow, no maker’s marks are present.
Condition report:
The suite is in good used condition with signs of age and functional use. There are minor cosmetic imperfections including light surface scratches, small scuffs to the edges, and minor chips to the veneer on some pieces. The mirror frame exhibits a darker, more reddish wood tone compared to the dressing table, suggesting it may be a later addition or from a different production run. The upholstered stool shows light wear but remains free of significant staining or tears.
