Lot 854: A reproduction hardwood gateleg drop-leaf table in the 17th-century style
A reproduction gateleg drop-leaf table constructed in the 17th-century style, likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The table is fashioned from a medium-toned hardwood with a polished finish. The top is oval when fully extended, comprising a narrow fixed centre section and two semi-circular drop leaves. The base features six turned baluster-form legs joined by peripheral stretchers. Two of the legs are hinged on a gateleg mechanism to provide support for the leaves when raised. No permanent maker’s marks or stamps are present. The item currently bears temporary auction labels, including a rectangular sticker for Liskeard Auction Rooms (Lot 854) and a handwritten tag.
Condition report:
The table is in fair to good condition. The top surface exhibits significant wear, including multiple scratches, scuffs, and areas of finish loss. There are visible minor water or heat marks on the leaves. The base and legs show typical knocks, abrasions, and wear consistent with age and domestic use. The gateleg mechanism is functional.
