Lot 911: A Victorian Style Four-Tier Corner Whatnot and an Edwardian Style Three-Tier Folding Cake Stand
A late 20th-century reproduction corner whatnot or etagere in the Victorian style. The piece is constructed from wood with a dark red faux-marbleised or lacquered finish. It features four graduated quarter-round shelves, each embellished with a gilt transfer-printed foliate border. The structure is supported by turned spindle uprights terminating in acorn-style finials. This is a fixed, one-piece construction with non-adjustable shelves.
Accompanied by an early 20th-century folding cake stand in the Edwardian style. Constructed from mahogany-stained hardwood, the stand comprises three octagonal shelves, each featuring a recessed circular centre. The shelves are mounted within a folding A-frame stand topped with an arched carry handle. The folding mechanism allows for flat storage, and the shelves are fixed to pivoting supports.
Condition report:
Both items exhibit surface wear consistent with age and use. The whatnot shows minor scuffing to the lacquered finish and some wear to the gilt transfers. The cake stand shows light scratches, minor fading to the wood stain, and general signs of handling.
