Lot 920: A Pair of Mid-Century Modern Style Beech and Cane Side Chairs
A pair of side chairs constructed from a light-toned hardwood, likely beech, featuring a clear honey-coloured finish. The design is characteristic of mid-to-late 20th-century modernism, featuring a minimalist ladder-back construction with two horizontal slats. The upper slat of each backrest is detailed with three decorative horizontal incised lines. The chairs are fitted with inset, hand-woven cane seats. The structure is supported by four tapered, circular-section legs, reinforced with side and rear stretchers for stability. The overall aesthetic is reminiscent of Italian modernist designs of the period. No maker marks, labels, or stamps are visible on the frames or underneath the seats.
Condition report:
The chairs are in good vintage condition. The woven cane seats remain taut and intact on both examples, with no obvious breaks or sagging. The wooden frames show minor surface wear, including light scuffs and small abrasions consistent with age and domestic use, particularly around the feet and stretchers.
