Lot 979: Modern Chinese Aubusson Style Sculpted Wool Rug
A modern Chinese wool rug in the Aubusson style, dating to the late 20th century. The rug is constructed with a heavy wool pile on a cotton foundation, featuring the thick super-pile characteristic of Chinese imports from this period. The decorative scheme includes a central oval medallion with a floral spray, surrounded by rococo-style scrollwork and a wide border of scrolling flowers and foliage. A hand-carved technique has been employed to clip the pile around the motifs, creating a three-dimensional embossed effect. The colour palette consists of a dusty rose ground with highlights in sage green, cream, taupe, and terracotta. The rug is finished with a short cream-coloured cotton fringe to the ends.
Condition report:
The rug appears to be in good overall condition. The pile remains thick and plush with the carved details well-defined. There is minor tangling and light soiling to the fringe consistent with age and use. No significant staining or areas of uneven wear are visible in the provided images.
