Lot 386: Arts and Crafts style crewel-work embroidered wall hanging
A crewel-work style embroidered wall hanging featuring a traditional Tree of Life motif. The central tree design is symmetrically arranged with various stylized floral stems, seed pods, and two birds perched among the upper branches. Below the tree is a base of several floral stalks emerging from a wavy ground line. The central panel is framed by a decorative border of a continuous trailing vine and leaf pattern, enclosed within simple linear stitched borders. The embroidery is executed in a muted, earthy palette including shades of sage green, dusty rose, slate blue, and tan. The stitching is worked in thick wool or yarn on a heavy, cream-coloured woven textile ground. Visible stitch techniques include prominent chain stitch and stem stitch, lending the piece a raised, textural quality. The wall hanging is finished with knotted fringes at both the top and bottom edges and is currently mounted on a simple dark wooden rod for display.
