Lot 493: A Trio of Sandland Ware Ceramic Spirit Barrels by Lancaster and Sandland Ltd
A trio of vintage ceramic spirit barrels or kegs produced by Lancaster and Sandland Ltd of Hanley, Staffordshire, as part of their Sandland Ware range. Each barrel is of horizontal form with a flattened front face, designed to hold Gin, Port, or Sherry. The bodies are crafted from earthenware with a cream glaze. Decoration is applied via transfer-printing, featuring elaborate scrollwork cartouches enclosing the spirit names in black serif capital letters. The set is distinguished by hand-painted horizontal bands in blue for the Gin barrel, maroon for the Port barrel, and forest green for the Sherry barrel. A circular emblem containing a stylized penguin, the company mark for Lancaster and Sandland Ltd, is printed above each spirit name. Gilt highlights are applied to the rims and tap mounts. The Gin barrel includes a cream-coloured screw-on cap with an attached cork and a gold-toned tap marked with the numeral 2. The Port barrel is fitted with a wooden bung lid and a white ceramic tap with a clear plastic lever. The Sherry barrel has a white ceramic tap with a white plastic lever and is currently without a lid.
