An antique set of brass and mahogany beam balance scales manufactured by W & T Avery Ltd of Birmingham. The instrument features a central polished brass column supporting an equal-arm brass beam with a central vertical pointer. One side of the beam supports a flat circular brass pan via a shaped brass arm, while the opposing side supports a dished brass pan suspended by three metal chains. The assembly is mounted on a rectangular mahogany plinth with a bevelled edge. The beam is stamped with the characters W & T AVERY LTD over BIRMINGHAM. The lot includes a set of graduated circular brass weights with the following transcribed markings: 1 lb AVERY LTD, 8 OZ W & T AVERY LTD, 2 OZ W & T AVERY LTD, 1 OZ W & T AVERY LTD, 1/2 OZ AVERY, and 1/4 OZ AVERY.
