Lot 531: A Trio of Antique and Vintage Pressed Glass Eye Baths
A trio of medicinal glass eye baths, also known as eye wash cups, dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. The collection comprises two pedestal-stemmed cups and one low-form or squat cup. Two of the items are made of deep cobalt blue pressed glass, a colour traditionally used for medicinal containers. The third is made of clear pressed glass. All three pieces feature an anatomically shaped bowl designed to fit the orbital area of the eye. The construction is pressed glass, evidenced by the uniform moulding and finished bases without pontil marks. These utilitarian items were widely produced in the United Kingdom during the Victorian and Edwardian eras for domestic ocular hygiene. No manufacturer marks or registration stamps are visible on the items.
