Lot 591: A mid-20th-century Smiths brass lantern mantel clock
A mid-20th-century brass mantel clock by Smiths, constructed in the traditional 17th-century English lantern clock style. The brass case features four turned corner pillars terminating in finials and resting on bun feet. The clock is surmounted by a large exposed bell housed within a strap frame and topped with a central finial. The front and sides are decorated with pierced brass frets depicting a scrolling dolphin motif. The circular brass dial features an engraved centre with foliate scroll patterns and a chapter ring marked with black Roman numerals and star-shaped half-hour markers. The dial is signed Smiths to the left of the centre and Made in Gt Britain at the base. It retains ornate pierced black steel hands and a single winding hole. The interior houses a mechanical 7-jewel lever escapement movement. The movement backplate is stamped Made in Great Britain, Smiths Clocks & Watches Ltd, and Unadjusted Seven (7) Jewels. The rear door is stamped Made in England. A winding key is present inside the case.
