Lot 815: A Gentleman's Dunn and Co. Silk Plush Top Hat with an Austin Reed Metal Travelling Case
A gentleman’s silk plush top hat by the London firm Dunn and Co., accompanied by an associated metal travelling case. The hat features a black silk plush exterior (hatter’s plush) with a tall, slightly flared crown and a hand-curled brim finished with silk binding. The interior is lined with a cream-coloured silk or satin fabric and contains a light-coloured leather sweatband with a silk ribbon bow at the rear. The crown lining is printed with the maker’s mark: Dunn and Co. Hat-Makers London, along with the initials EC. The circular metal travelling case is constructed from tin with a hinged lid and a metal tongue-and-slot latch. The exterior has a weathered brown-painted finish, and the interior is painted blue. A small fabric label inside the lid identifies the case as originating from Austin Reed, Regent Street.
