Lot 645: A Set of Four Wedgwood for James Powell & Sons Queensware Coffee Cups and Saucers
A set of four cream-coloured earthenware (Queensware) coffee cups and saucers, manufactured by Wedgwood at their Etruria factory specifically for the retailer James Powell & Sons. Each piece features a hand-painted grapevine motif with clusters of purple grapes and green foliage on a cream ground, finished with a brown-lined rim. The cups are of a cylindrical form with distinctive square-profile, flat-topped handles. The undersides of the cups and saucers bear printed marks reading Manufactured for JAMES POWELL & SONS / Whitefriars Glass Works. E.C. / and / 11 Conduit Street. W / LONDON, alongside the manufacturer mark WEDGWOOD / ETRURIA. The saucers additionally feature impressed WEDGWOOD and ETRURIA marks, together with small potter’s marks including HH. Each piece is inscribed with the handwritten pattern number A 4937 in gold/brown script.
Cups: Standard demitasse/small coffee size.
Saucers: Proportionate to cups.
