Lot 690: A Large Copeland and Garrett Blue and White Transfer-Printed Earthenware Platter
This large earthenware platter is of oval form with a shaped, lobed rim. It is decorated in underglaze blue with a transfer-printed romantic landscape scene, part of the Ancient Ruins series produced by Copeland and Garrett. The central composition depicts a river landscape with figures and livestock, including sheep and cattle, in the foreground. To the left are substantial architectural ruins featuring a prominent archway, while a fortified manor or castle is visible in the distance. The scene is framed by a dense border of scrolling foliage and floral motifs. The underside of the platter features both printed and impressed marks. The blue printed mark consists of a crown above a circular device containing the text COPELAND & GARRETT, with NEW BLANCHE in the centre and a cross symbol with the characters LL at the base. There is also an impressed circular mark reading COPELAND & GARRETT surrounding the numeral 4. These marks identify the piece as being manufactured at the Spode works in Stoke-on-Trent between 1833 and 1847.
