Lot 266: Vintage Alba Model 44 Portable Transistor Radio with Original Box
A vintage British portable transistor radio manufactured by Alba, identified as Model 44. The device is encased in a two-tone red and cream leatherette-covered cabinet, featuring a brass-coloured metal trim strip across the front and a perforated metal speaker grille. The top panel is fitted with two clear plastic circular control dials: the left-hand dial serves for tuning, with markings for Medium Wave (200-550 metres) and Long Wave (marked ‘LONG’ and ‘1500’), while the right-hand dial controls volume and incorporates an ‘OFF-ON’ switch. A central slide switch allows for selection between ‘M’ and ‘L’ wavebands. The front brass-coloured strip is marked with the ‘ALBA’ name and ‘transistor’ in stylised script. The radio is accompanied by its original cardboard shipping box, which displays the Alba logo and text reading ‘TELEVISION AND RADIO OF QUALITY’ and ‘MODEL 44’.
